1. Introduction
Friends whom Allah has blessed, in modern terms we often hear the phrase “secular knowledge” to describe the natural sciences, mathematics, economics, sociology, and computer science. But in Islam, as long as such knowledge brings benefit, improves human life, and does not contradict the Sharī‘ah, it is called Beneficial General Knowledge. From the perspective of cognitive psychology and science, these fields are means for humans to read Allah’s created signs in the universe (āyāt kawniyyah).Islam has never rejected general knowledge. In fact, general knowledge is an instrument for Muslims to fulfill their role as stewards of the earth (khalīfah fīl arḍ). Through astronomy we calculate prayer times, through medicine we save lives, and through agriculture we feed millions of hungry people.
Allah ﷻ challenges the human intellect to examine His greatness behind the phenomena of nature:
إِنَّ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلَافِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ لَآيَاتٍ لِأُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ
“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.” (QS. Āli ‘Imrān: 190)
Every scientific contribution, no matter how small, that eases the burden of human life in this world holds great value in the eyes of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, as he said:
خَيْرُ النَّاسِ أَنْفَعُهُمْ لِلنَّاسِ
“The best of people are those most beneficial to people.” (HR. Al-Ṭabarānī)
2. Lessons and Messages
The greatest moral message of this topic is to broaden your intention in seeking knowledge. Study computer science, accounting, engineering, or agriculture not merely to chase a high monthly paycheck. Make that knowledge a real contribution to upholding the _‘izzah_—honor—of the Muslim ummah. When your intention shifts from seeking material gain to seeking Allah’s pleasure, then every page of general knowledge you read is recorded as the reward of striving in His path.Let us recall the story of the discovery of the zero numeral by the greatest Muslim mathematician in history, Al-Khwārizmī. Before zero was introduced, the world’s calculation systems were extremely complex and limited. Thanks to his intelligence in formulating zero, today’s civilization enjoys computers, aviation, and artificial intelligence (AI). Millions of lives have been eased because of that one mathematical insight. What is sad today is that many brilliant Muslim scientists in science, medicine, and technology work in the West, yet their knowledge ends up advancing other civilizations. Meanwhile, in Muslim countries we still lack innovation, lack independent research, and often neglect to support our own young people who are gifted in general sciences. Our dependence on foreign technology is a disheartening reality we must change.
Beneficial general knowledge is like a scalpel—extremely sharp in the hands of a professional surgeon:If the scalpel is held by a person of faith and knowledge, it will be used to remove tumors, save patients, and bring healing. But if the same scalpel is held by a faithless criminal, it will be used to threaten, injure, and destroy social order. Science and technology are neutral; they become a blessing or a curse depending on who holds them.
There is a story about a student of modern agricultural engineering who returned to his home village after a community service program. He saw an old farmer observing a coconut tree whose fruit kept falling before ripening. Speaking in a scientific tone full of foreign jargon, the student said, “Oh, sir, based on agronomic analysis and macronutrient deficiency, your coconut tree is experiencing potassium absorption dysfunction in its soil structure!”The old farmer stared blankly, confused. “What do you mean, son?”
The student replied, “I mean, your coconut tree needs fertilizer!”The farmer patted the student’s shoulder and laughed, “Oh son… your university knowledge reaches the sky, but to say ‘it needs fertilizer’ you had to orbit outer space first. General knowledge is only beneficial if it makes ordinary people understand, not if it makes them more confused!”The lesson: Study general knowledge to the highest level, master the most advanced technology, but remain grounded when conveying its benefits to society. Great knowledge is knowledge that solves real problems, not knowledge that merely looks impressive on paper or in words.
3. Conclusion and Closing
Dear brothers and sisters, Islam has never been hostile to general knowledge, science, or technology. The Qur’an itself encourages us to explore the earth and the heavens. Let us abandon the view that studying worldly knowledge has less value as worship. As long as the general knowledge you pursue brings benefit to people, eases the suffering of others, and safeguards the sovereignty of the ummah, then you are worshipping in the broadest sense.May Allah ﷻ bless every profession and branch of general knowledge we are pursuing today, make it a source of ongoing charity (ṣadaqah jāriyah), and guide us to become a self-reliant and distinguished ummah on the stage of world civilization
