1. Introduction
Friends beloved by Allah, have you ever felt a strong desire to attend a study circle, read a book, or memorize the Qur’an, but your body felt so weak? Eyes that tire quickly, an aching back, or a chronic illness often become internal barriers that drain our motivation. We think, “Ah, my body is weak; maybe I’m not destined to be a person of knowledge.” Psychologically and spiritually, knowledge does not reside in strong muscles, but in a pure soul and a firm resolve. Allah SWT fully understands the limitations of His servants. Islam is a realistic religion; Allah does not demand results beyond our capacity, but He judges the sincerity of our effort.
Let us refresh our souls with the words of Allah SWT:
لَّيْسَ عَلَى الضُّعَفَاءِ وَلَا عَلَى الْمَرْضَىٰ وَلَا عَلَى الَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ مَا يُنفِقُونَ حَرَجٌ إِذَا نَصَحُوا لِلَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ۚ مَا عَلَى الْمُحْسِنِينَ مِن سَبِيلٍ ۚ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
“There is no blame upon the weak or upon the ill or upon those who cannot find what to spend, if they are sincere to Allah and His Messenger. There is no cause against the doers of good. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” (QS. At-Tawbah: 91)
If even in the matter of physical jihad Allah grants an excuse for the sick, then the same applies to the jihad of seeking knowledge. Even more beautifully, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave glad tidings that our reward will not decrease in the slightest when our bodies weaken, as long as our intention and habits remain intact:
إِذَا مَرِضَ الْعَبْدُ أَوْ سَافَرَ، كُتِبَ لَهُ مِثْلُ مَا كَانَ يَعْمَلُ مُقِيمًا صَحِيحًا
“If a servant falls ill or travels, it will be recorded for him the same reward as what he used to do when he was residing and in good health.” (HR. Al-Bukhārī)
2. Lessons and Message
Physical weakness is not a door that shuts off mercy; it is a test that filters sincerity. A healthy person seeking knowledge is remarkable, but a person who struggles against pain for the sake of a single verse of Allah is a hero in the eyes of the inhabitants of the heavens. Let us remember the story of Imām Al-A‘mash, a great scholar of hadith. He suffered from night blindness and could barely see, walked with a limp, and often endured severe digestive illness. One day, in a state of extreme weakness and trembling, he still forced himself to sit in the mosque and dictate hadith to his students. When his student wept seeing his pitiful condition, he smiled weakly and said, “By Allah, if it were not for the fear that this knowledge would disappear from people’s hearts, I would prefer to lie in my bed at home.” He traded the last of his physical pain for the sake of the knowledge we benefit from today. Seeking knowledge is actually like downloading data with an internet connection. Our body, whether healthy or sick, is just the “phone casing.” There are people whose phones have three cameras, are sleek, with a crystal-clear screen—that is, physically healthy and fit—but they never use it to download religious knowledge. It’s only used for games or watching videos of smart cats.
Meanwhile, there are people whose phones have cracked screens, batteries that drain quickly, and casings patched with tape—that is, physically sick and frail—but they keep using it to download lectures and read the Qur’an digitally until their memory is full of blessing. The question is: in the sight of Allah, which phone has more value? Certainly the one whose function is maximized, not the one that looks flawless on the outside but is empty inside!
3. Conclusion and Closing
Brothers and sisters, physical weakness is not a reason to stop learning. In today’s digital age, social media and online study circles are an extraordinary facility Allah has provided so that even a weak body can still drink in the sweetness of knowledge from bed. Don’t focus on what your body “cannot” do; focus on what your heart “wants” to offer to Allah. Let us use whatever energy we have left, however small, to remain seekers of knowledge. For the weariness of the body in obedience will fade, but its reward and knowledge will remain eternal, all the way to Paradise
