1. Introduction
Have you ever reflected on what distinguishes humans from other creatures? One of them is curiosity. Allah gave us intellect not to be passive, but to think actively, to ask, and to seek the truth. Yet in this digital age, curiosity often goes off track and turns into aimless nosiness—prying into people’s faults or engaging in pointless arguments with no end.How does Islam view the art of asking and discussing in a way that brings peace to the soul? Asking is the key to the storehouse of knowledge. Islam never forbids its followers from thinking critically, as long as the intention is to learn—not to test others or belittle them.
Allah SWT says in the Qur’an:
فَاسْأَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِن كُنتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
“So ask the people of knowledge if you do not know.” (QS. An-Naḥl: 43)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also emphasized that the cure for ignorance is to ask properly, not to make guesses that lead to slander. He said:
أَلَا سَأَلُوا إِذْ لَمْ يَعْلَمُوا فَإِنَّمَا شِفَاءُ الْعِيِّ السُّؤَالُ
“Why did they not ask when they did not know? Indeed, the cure for ignorance is to ask.” (HR. Abū Dāwūd)
2. Lessons and Message
Curiosity is like river water. If it’s channeled properly through irrigation, it will nourish the fields and give life. But if it’s left to flow without direction or strong embankments, it becomes a flash flood that destroys homes and bridges. Asking with adab is the irrigation; arguing without knowledge is the flood.Do you remember the story of Prophet Mūsā AS when he studied under Prophet Khiḍr AS? Prophet Mūsā, a mighty Messenger, humbly asked, “May I follow you so that you teach me the right knowledge you have been taught?” There was sincerity in that question. A great teacher was willing to become an obedient student just to satisfy a pure curiosity. This teaches us that before knowledge, our ego must submit.Today, many people debate in social media comment sections not to seek the truth, but to seek validation. Their principle is: “I have to win, no matter what!” There’s a story about someone who argued pointlessly on social media for 3 hours just to defend their argument. After typing until their fingers cramped, they realized the account they were arguing with was a bot/fake account. They got the exhaustion, lost the reward, and the embarrassment was unbearable! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ reminded us: “Whoever abandons arguing even when he is in the right, a house will be guaranteed for him on the outskirts of Paradise.” So why waste your data on debates that only raise your blood pressure?
3. Conclusion and Closing
Brothers and sisters, let us direct our curiosity toward things that bring us closer to Allah and benefit others. Ask to remove ignorance, and discuss to unite hearts—not to divide them. Before your thumb types a question or argument on social media, ask yourself: Will this increase knowledge, or will it only create more enemies
