1. Opening
Friends who are blessed by Allah, have we ever thought about the difference between a smart person and a wise person? In this modern world, smart people are everywhere. They master theories, read hundreds of books, and are eloquent in debate. Yet, a philosopher or scientist is not necessarily a wise person. Someone is truly recognized as wise only when he has succeeded in translating and practicing all his knowledge into daily behavior. Knowledge is not merely an ornament in the head, but a guide for one’s footsteps. Psychologically and spiritually, knowledge that is not practiced creates a mental burden in the form of misalignment between what is known and what is done.
Allah SWT reminds us very gently yet firmly in the Qur’an:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لِمَ تَقُولُونَ مَا لَا تَفْعَلُونَ
“O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do?”[QS. Aṣ-Ṣaff: 2]
Beneficial knowledge is knowledge that produces fear of Allah and manifests in noble character. Rasulullah ﷺ also often prayed to be protected from knowledge that stops only at the throat:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ لَا يَنْفَعُ
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit.”[HR. Muslim]
2. Lessons and Message
Let us recall a moment from the time of the Tābiʿīn. There was a great scholar who wept uncontrollably after delivering a sermon about charity. When his student asked, “Why are you weeping so intensely, O Imam?” He replied, “I weep because when I delivered the verse about charity just now, I remembered that I have not given charity today. I fear Allah will classify me among the hypocrites who are only good at talking.” What an extraordinary honesty of the soul.
Imagine this: There is someone who has memorized an entire swimming manual. He knows the perfect angle of the arm stroke, the volume of oxygen needed, even the gravitational pull of water. He has it all by heart! But, the moment he is dropped into a chest-deep catfish pond... he immediately panics, flails, and screams, “Help, I’m drowning!”Funny, isn’t it? Why? Because he only “knew” but never “jumped in” to practice it. That is exactly like a person who has abundant religious knowledge or life philosophy, but is stingy, selfish, and short-tempered in daily life. His knowledge is still only a “manual,” not yet a “swimming ability.”
3. Conclusion & Closing
Friends, let us shift our focus. Do not just be busy piling up information and cool quotes on social media to appear smart. Start with small things: if you know that a smile is charity, then smile at the people at home today. If you know that forgiving is noble, bring down your ego right now.Becoming wise does not require long titles. Becoming wise only requires a sincere heart to ground knowledge into behavior
