1. Introduction
Friends whom Allah has blessed, in the world of finance and investment, we know the term passive income_—income that keeps flowing even while we sleep. Scientifically and sociologically, knowledge that we teach to others is the most efficient form of spiritual passive income, or _ṣadaqah jāriyah. When we teach one good thing, that knowledge transforms into social energy that moves exponentially—creating multi-level reward. One person we teach, then teaches it again to another, creates a network of goodness that will never be severed even after our bodies are covered with earth
.Allah ﷻ says regarding the importance of learning and giving admonition, i.e., teaching:
وَمَا كَانَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لِيَنفِرُوا كَافَّةً ۚ فَلَوْلَا نَفَرَ مِن كُلِّ فِرْقَةٍ مِّنْهُمْ طَائِفَةٌ لِّيَتَفَقَّهُوا فِي الدِّينِ وَلِيُنذِرُوا
قَوْمَهُمْ إِذَا رَجَعُوا إِلَيْهِمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَحْذَرُونَ
“It is not for the believers to go forth all at once. For there should separate from every division of them a group to obtain understanding in the religion and warn their people when they return to them, that they might beware.” (QS. At-Tawbah: 122)
The continuity of this flowing reward is stated plainly by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a ḥadīth that soothes the heart:
إِذَا مَاتَ الْإِنسَانُ انْقَطَعَ عَنْهُ عَمَلُهُ إِلَّا مِنْ ثَلَاثَة إِلَّا مِنْ صَدَقَةٍ جَارِيَةٍ، أَوْ عِلْمٍ يُنْتَفَعُ بِهِ، أَوْ وَلَدٍ صَالِحٍ يَدْعُو لَهُ
“When a human being dies, all of his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, knowledge that is benefited from, or a righteous child who prays for him.” (HR. Muslim)
2. Lessons and Message
The greatest moral message of this topic is _intellectual generosity_—not being stingy with knowledge. The knowledge we possess is not our personal property to boast about; it is a trust. Withholding knowledge means stopping the potential for guidance to reach others, while also harming ourselves in the future.Imagine the story of Imām Ash-Shāfi‘ī. He passed away more than a thousand years ago, in 204 AH. His body has long since returned to the earth. Yet every time a student in some corner of the archipelago, or a Muslim on another part of the globe, reads his book, learns how to pray correctly, or understands a ruling of fiqh through his madhhab, the reward flows abundantly into Imām Ash-Shāfi‘ī’s grave—without decreasing in the slightest the reward of the one who acts upon it. That is thousands of years of uninterrupted flowing reward!Knowledge is like a lit candle. If you have a candle burning in the darkness, and ten other people come with unlit candles and light theirs from yours, does your candle’s light grow dim? Not at all! On the contrary, the room around you becomes ten times brighter. Teaching knowledge will never reduce our own intelligence; it multiplies the light of our lives. When we have a shopping discount link or info about free takjīl, we’re quick to share it in family and alumni WhatsApp groups. But when it comes to beneficial knowledge, tips for khushū‘ in worship, or a good lecture video, our thumbs suddenly stiffen and refuse to hit the share button. The excuse? “Ah, I don’t want to look like I’m acting pious.” Yet when sharing celebrity gossip, we’re not afraid of looking like we know too much. Remember: instead of filling your social media with meaningless scrolling history, let your thumb be a witness on the Day of Judgment that spread beneficial knowledge.
3. Conclusion and Closing
Death is certain, and the cessation of deeds is a consequence. Yet Islam gives us an “emergency exit” called beneficial knowledge. Teaching knowledge—even if it’s just one verse or one simple act of goodness—is the best way to remain “alive” and continue harvesting reward after we are gone.
Brothers and sisters, do not belittle the small good you teach to your child, younger sibling, friend, or follower on social media. Let the remainder of our lives be a bridge of knowledge that keeps connecting goodness.
