1. Introduction
Ontologically, Islam is not a religion born as a reaction to modern extremism. Islam is a value system that has an automatic self-regulating balance mechanism. In the sociology of religion, the concept of the “Middle Path” or Wasathiyah is the pinnacle of stability. Like a planet’s orbit that keeps the universe from destruction—if too close to the sun it burns, if too far it freezes—such is the human soul; it needs a Sharia that is neither rigid nor fluid, a moderation that unites logic and feeling so we remain sane in an increasingly extreme world.
Evidence from the Qur’an and Hadith
"And thus We have made you a 'middle nation' that you may be witnesses over mankind, and the Messenger may be a witness over you." (QS. Al-Baqarah : 143)
"Adhere to the middle path, you will succeed. Adhere to the middle path, you will succeed. Adhere to the middle path, you will succeed." (HR. Ahmad)
2. Lessons and Messages
Being moderate does not mean we are hesitant in religion; rather, we love peace too much to become extreme. A Muslim’s strength is not in a loud voice or sharp tongue, but in the ability to stand firm on principles without trampling the dignity of others. Wasathiyah is about the courage to be just, even when emotions are running high.Once, a Bedouin Arab urinated in a corner of the Prophet’s Mosque. The companions were angry and wanted to attack him immediately. But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stopped them and said, "Leave him, then pour a bucket of water over his urine." After things calmed, he approached the Bedouin and advised him very gently that the mosque is a sacred place. The man was so moved by his gentleness that he prayed, "O Allah, have mercy on me and Muhammad only, and do not have mercy on anyone else!" The Messenger smiled upon hearing that prayer, showing how wasathiyah—a proportionate attitude—can transform hatred into pure love.Wasathiyah is like salt in cooking. If too little, the dish is bland and tasteless. If too much, the dish is salty and inedible. But if it’s just right, it does not call attention to itself; instead, it makes all the other flavors taste delicious. A Wasathiyah Muslim is one whose presence makes the atmosphere "delicious," not a source of conflict that stings the tongue. These days, there are people so zealous in religion that they forget the principle of wasathiyah. After learning one verse, they feel they hold the key to Paradise. If they see someone slightly different, they immediately brand them "inhabitants of Hell." This is like someone who just got one bolt but already feels like an expert at assembling an airplane. Religion should make us wise human beings, not "God’s police" who are busy raiding others’ sins while forgetting to wash their own sins at home.
3. Conclusion
Dear brothers and sisters, Wasathiyah is a pure legacy from Allah and His Messenger, not a man-made trend. It is our original identity as Ummatan Wasatha. Let us practice Islam in a beautiful way: strong in conviction, yet courteous in interaction. For truly, the world does not need more people who are skilled at debating, but the world needs more people who can spread mercy.
