1. Introduction
Life is a harmony. Scientifically, this universe endures because of the law of balance (homeostasis). The same applies to the human soul. Wasathiyah in the form of Tawazun is not a choice, but a biological and spiritual necessity. If we only chase material (the body), our soul will dry up. If we only soar spiritually (the soul) without staying grounded, we will lose our function as khalifah. Tawazun is the bridge that brings together the light of revelation with the logic of reason, and personal interests with the welfare of the ummah.
Evidence from the Qur’an and Hadith
وَابْتَغِ فِيْمَآ اٰتٰىكَ اللّٰهُ الدَّارَ الْاٰخِرَةَ وَلَا تَنْسَ نَصِيْبَكَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا
"And seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; but do not forget your share of the world..." (QS. Al-Qashash : 77)
"Indeed, your Lord has a right over you, your self has a right over you, and your family has a right over you. So give each who has a right their due." (HR. Bukhari)
2. Lessons and Messages
The truest justice begins with treating yourself fairly. Do not let one side of your life “colonize” the other. A great person is not one who can conquer the world, but one who can allocate time justly: a time to prostrate to Allah, a time to kiss the foreheads of wife and children, and a time to work for others.Recall the story of Abdullah bin Amr bin Ash who, out of zeal for worship, fasted every day and prayed all night until his body grew gaunt and his eyes sunken. His wife felt neglected. The Messenger of Allah SAW then came to him not to praise his devotion, but to reprimand him with deep affection. The Prophet said that his body had a right to rest. There we learn: even the “holiest” worship can become improper if it damages our human balance.Imagine a bow and arrow. If the bowstring is pulled too tightly beyond its limit (extreme/rigid), the bow may snap or your hands will tremble from exhaustion, causing the arrow to fly uncontrollably.
But if the bowstring is left too slack (too loose/free), the arrow will have no power to launch and will simply drop at your feet. Tawazun is the precise pull—measured and exact—so your good intention flies straight and hits the target of truth. There was a young man who had just started learning religion, and he wanted to be extremely ascetic. He quit his job, stayed silent in the mosque, and prayed all day. When his stomach growled with hunger, he prayed, "O Allah, send down food from the sky." Suddenly, the mosque caretaker came sweeping and accidentally nudged him, saying, "Bro, if you want to eat, there’s a food stall out front that needs a dishwasher. Allah gave you hands to work, not just to hold up in prayer!" Tawazun is simple: Pray as if you’ll die tomorrow, work as if you’ll live a thousand years.
3. Conclusion
Dear brothers and sisters, the main characteristic of Wasathiyah is Tawazun (Balance). Let us educate our minds with knowledge, our bodies with halal nutrition, and our souls with dhikr. Do not be someone who is ritually pious but socially harmful, or intellectually smart but blind to revelation. Keep the balance, and you will find peace.
