1. Introduction
Friends beloved by Allah,
When financial barriers block our children’s path to seeking knowledge, an educational institution or community must not feel it has to bear the entire burden alone. Scientifically, in strategic management and institutional sociology, the most accurate solution to overcome funding limitations is to build strategic partnerships—collaborating with institutions that provide educational assistance. Whether it is a baitul māl, zakat institution, national humanitarian foundation, or international sponsor. When an institution opens itself to synergize and share resources, the financial constraints that once looked like an impenetrable thick wall will turn into wide-open doors of ease.Islam is a religion that lays the foundation of its civilization on the principle of _ta‘āwun_—mutual help and collaboration in goodness. Uniting the potential of one institution with donor institutions is a blessed means to generate a great, self-reliant strength to safeguard the education of the ummah.
Allah Subḥānahu wa Ta‘ālā firmly commands us to collaborate in every line of righteousness and piety:
وَتَعَاوَنُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلْبِرِّ وَٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْعُدْوَٰنِ
“And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and transgression.” (QS. Al-Mā’idah: 2)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also illustrated how powerful the believers become when they reinforce and collaborate with one another like an inseparable structure:
الْمُؤْمِنُ لِلْمُؤْمِنِ كَالْبُنْيَانِ يَشُدُّ بَعْضُهُ بَعْضًا
“A believer to another believer is like a solid building, one part strengthening another.” (HR. Bukhari)
2. Lessons and Message
Let us picture a remote educational foundation or madrasah that has just been struck by a severe trial—its learning facilities are damaged and its institutional funds are empty. In the makeshift office, the administrators sit in deep thought, holding back tears. Before them lies a pile of files of orphans and underprivileged children who are at risk of dropping out because the institution can no longer subsidize their operational costs. The atmosphere is suffocating; it feels as if the dream of producing a generation of Qur’an memorizers and skilled scholars there will end that very day.But the miracle of collaboration wipes away those tears. The administrators do not give up. They organize the data and step forward to collaborate with humanitarian institutions and baitul māl that have access to education funds. When the Memorandum of Understanding of partnership is signed, and the partner institution says, “Bismillah, starting this month we will cover all operational costs for the orphans here,” tears of joy erupt in that room. The head of the madrasah prostrates in gratitude, his tears soaking the carpet. That inter-institutional collaboration has become a helping hand from heaven that reconnects the lifeline of education that was nearly severed.[MoU]
Friends, the analogy is like an ambulance carrying a critical patient in the middle of the night, but it suddenly runs out of fuel on a lonely uphill road. The ambulance driver does not have a penny to buy gas, while the fuel tank is completely dry. If the ambulance is forced to go on alone, it will stall, and the patient’s life inside will be at risk. But what happens if a large rescue truck comes from behind? The truck has no space to carry the patient, but it has abundant fuel and a very strong steel tow rope. When that truck ties its steel rope to the ambulance’s front bumper and pulls it together up the hill to the hospital, the patient is saved. Collaborating with educational aid institutions is the process of “tying the rope to the rescue truck.” Our educational institution has a “patient” called the future of our students, and the aid institution has the financial “fuel.” Unite the two, and this vehicle of da‘wah will race safely to its destination.
There is a unique story of an ustadz who managed a small pesantren and was anxious about finding funds to repair the leaky student dormitory. Because his capital was limited, he bravely came to propose a collaboration with a large zakat institution in the city.During the presentation, because he was so nervous, the ustadz misspoke in the closing line of his proposal. He said, “Thus we submit this collaboration proposal. We sincerely hope that your institution will ‘include us in your cash budget,’ so that our students no longer need to be ‘included in the rainwater’ every night!”The director of the zakat institution burst out laughing at the phrase “included in the rainwater.” Wiping tears of laughter, the director replied, “Relax, Ustadz. To save the students from the trial of ‘portable rain’ inside their rooms, we approve the beautiful dormitory construction program today through our partnership program!”This funny story carries deep wisdom: never be ashamed or too proud to knock on the door of collaboration. The blessings of knowledge and da‘wah are too vast to be carried alone; the space for partnership is what Allah has provided so that sectarian egos melt into real blessings for the ummah.
3. Conclusion and Closing
Brothers and sisters, financial limitation is not the end of an educational institution’s struggle; it is a test of coordination. The concrete and elegant solution to this external obstacle is to actively collaborate and weave partnerships with institutions that provide educational assistance. Cast away all feelings of inferiority and closed-mindedness. Let us build transparent, accountable, and professional synergy with the ummah’s philanthropic institutions. When one heart meets another in the bond of ta‘āwun, no matter how heavy the financial burden, it will feel light, and the bridge to the future for underprivileged children will stand firm toward glory.Let us intertwine the fingers of collaboration, for the sake of upholding the light of knowledge upon this homeland
