1. Opening

Beloved friends whom Allah has blessed, in this modern age we often see people who deify human reason excessively, to the point of daring to challenge sacred religious texts. They assume that practicing religion wholeheartedly will kill the function of logic. In fact, Islam is a religion that deeply honors sound reason. However, we must understand scientifically that the human intellect—no matter how brilliant or sharp—has very limited boundaries of space and time. Human reason desperately needs the guidance of Divine Revelation—the Qur’an and Sunnah—to stay on the track of truth. Without the compass of revelation, reason wandering alone will only produce speculation, doubt, and ultimately end in sheer misguidance. Allah SWT has warned us about this in His words:

فَمَاذَا بَعْدَ الْحَقِّ إِلَّا الضَّلَالُ ۖ فَأَنَّىٰ تُصْرَفُونَ

“So what is there after truth except error? Then how are you turned away?”[QS. Yūnus: 32]

A clear, sound intellect [al-‘aql as-salīm] and authentic revelation [an-naql aṣ-ṣaḥīḥ] actually originate from the same source: Allah SWT. Allah is the Creator of reason, and Allah is also the Revealer of revelation. Because they stem from the same Essence, epistemologically there can never be a true contradiction between objective reason and religious law. Every law that Allah has ordained—whether we know its wisdom or not—is certainly coherent, logical, and can be accepted with complete tranquility by a pure human intellect.

2. Lessons and Message

Never pit your reason against Divine Revelation. If one day you find a religious ruling that seems “illogical,” do not rush to blame the religion. Know that it is not the revelation that is wrong, but the capacity of our intellect that has not yet reached, or has not been “upgraded,” to fathom the depths of Allah’s wisdom. Submit reason under the guidance of revelation. Let us reflect on the sorrowful story of a brilliant young man, a genius in science, who grew up idolizing his own logic. Because he felt everything must be proven in a laboratory, he began doubting the existence of God, doubting the concepts of reward and sin, until he finally chose to become an atheist and cast the Qur’an out of his life. For years he lived at the peak of worldly success, yet his soul was utterly barren. At the end of his life, as a severe illness consumed his body, he wept bitterly before his friend and said, “My logic can explain how these cancer cells are destroying my body, but this mind is completely paralyzed. It has no idea where my soul will go once this breath stops. I feel so lost and alone.” How tragic—reason that was exalted turned out to be unable to save his soul from emptiness at the most critical moment of his life.

Let us make a simple analogy. Human reason is like a pair of healthy, sharp, fully functioning eyes. Divine Revelation is like sunlight.

Now, imagine someone with perfectly healthy eyes—zero minus, zero plus, 100% acuity. Then he locks himself inside a pitch-black underground bunker, sealed tight, without a single beam of light entering. In that darkness, he shouts arrogantly, “I don’t need outside light! My eyes are healthy, my eyes are sharp, I can find my own way!” Will that person see the path? Of course not! He will still hit walls, trip, and fall. Why? Because no matter how functional the eyes are, they can never see the truth without the reflection of light. That is what our reason is like: it is an extraordinary inner eye, but it still needs the light of revelation so we do not crash into the walls of misguidance while navigating this life.

3. Conclusion and Closing

Revelation was not sent down to kill reason, but to guide reason so it functions optimally within its proper scope. Reason without revelation will go astray, while revelation without reason cannot be understood. The harmony of both is the main key to producing tranquility of the soul and the glory of civilization. Let us make the Qur’an and Sunnah the primary lamp that illuminates every inch of our thinking. May Allah SWT always preserve the clarity of our minds so they remain submissive and obedient under the shade of His revelation’s light.
