1. Preface
Beloved, God-loving friends, did you know that humans are born with a moral “software” called Fitrah? Psychologically, there is a phenomenon called _Moral Anxiety_—moral unease. When someone does something contrary to universal goodness—even if they have never studied religion—their nervous system sends signals of distress. Scientifically, our souls are designed to feel peace when giving and to feel constricted when selfish. This is proof that God has planted a seed of divinity in every chest—a innate nature that will “torment” its owner if he tries to oppose it with disobedience.Allah SWT has established that mankind was created within this upright value system:
فَاَقِمْ وَجْهَكَ لِلدِّيْنِ حَنِيْفًاۗ فِطْرَتَ اللّٰهِ الَّتِيْ فَطَرَ النَّاسَ عَلَيْهَاۗ
“So set your face upright toward the religion—the natural disposition of Allah upon which He created mankind.” (QS. Ar-Rum: 30)
[fitrah]The Messenger ﷺ also set the standard of sin on the detection of unease in the heart:
اَلْبِرُّ حُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ وَالْاِثْمُ مَا حَاكَ فِى صَدْرِكَ
“Righteousness is good character, and sin is what wavers in your chest.” (HR. Muslim)
2. Explanation
Sin is not only a violation of divine law, but also a betrayal of oneself. Your innate nature is good, so when you do wrong, your soul writhes because it is forced to dwell in darkness that is not its original habitat. Imagine someone famished eating a plate of food alone in a corner while turning his back on his mother who is also starving. Physically his stomach is full, but his eyes will show deep sorrow. He feels constricted not because he is forbidden by written law, but because his fitrah as a child is “tormenting” him. That unrest is a lash of mercy from Allah so he may return at once to his pure true self. The human soul is like a sheet of fine white silk. Obedience is perfume that makes it fragrant, while sin is a thick ink stain. If you drip ink onto that silk, you don’t need anyone to tell you the cloth has become ruined; your own eyes will be disturbed seeing it. Such is sin; it needs no external punishment to make you suffer—it torments you from within because your authenticity is white, not black. We can be funny sometimes; we try to be “bad guys” but fail completely because the small voice inside keeps nagging. We try to eat the proceeds of deceit, but end up stressed or sleepless. That’s a sign we truly “have a talent for being good,” but we pretend we want to be naughty. Come on, don’t force yourself to be a villain, because the “cost” of guilt is far more expensive than the false satisfaction gained from selfishness.
3. Lessons and Message
The profound lesson for us is to always respect the “small voice” in the heart. The moral message: don’t ignore the discomfort after doing wrong, because that is a sign your heart is not dead. Return to your honest fitrah; for only by following the coordinates Allah has set will you find the purest peace without having to pretend.
4. Conclusion
Beloved brothers and sisters, be grateful if you still feel sad after making a mistake. It proves you still possess a noble innate nature. Don’t let sin kill your fitrah until you can no longer distinguish what is fragrant and what is foul. Return to obedience, for only there will your soul find its most peaceful home
