1. Introduction
Beloved, God-conscious friends, our body is a masterpiece of biological precision. Scientifically, every puff of smoke that enters the lungs carries thousands of toxic substances that damage the respiratory and circulatory systems. Yet deeper than that, a tranquil soul is one able to control its own impulses. When a person keeps harming his body, he is actually experiencing an inner conflict between momentary desire and the responsibility to safeguard God’s trust. Maintaining health is a tangible form of gratitude, because a healthy body is the home for a strong soul to worship.
2. Explanation
Qur’anic and Hadith Evidence
A. Qur’anic Verse (Prohibition of self-destruction):
وَلَا تُلْقُوْا بِاَيْدِيْكُمْ اِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ
Meaning: “And do not throw yourselves into destruction with your own hands.” (QS. Al-Baqarah: 195) B. The Saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ (Prohibition of causing harm):
لَا ضَرَرَ وَلَا ضِرَارَ
“There should be no harming of oneself nor harming others.” (HR. Ibnu Majah & Ahmad)
3. Lessons and Message
Life is an extremely precious gift, so do not buy it at a cheap price with smoke. Smoking is not merely a health issue, but a matter of a servant’s integrity toward his Lord’s trust. If you know something slowly destroys you, yet you still do it, is that not a betrayal of yourself? Do not let yourself be trapped in “slow suicide” just for a false satisfaction that burns your future. Have we ever seen a very honest advertisement? On one side there is a picture of a bullet with the words “Fast Suicide,” and on the other side a picture of a cigarette with the words “Slow Suicide.” Imagine a father gravely ill in the hospital from years of lung damage. He looks at his young children with tearful eyes, realizing he may not live to see them grow up because he “signed” his own death contract puff by puff for years. The deepest regret is when we realize we have destroyed the chance to love our family longer just for a cloud of smoke. Human life is like a grand house lent to you by the King. You are asked to care for it so it stays clean and strong. Yet every day you light a small fire and let its smoke stain the walls and weaken the pillars of that house. You think, “Ah, it’s just a small fire; it won’t collapse now.” But over time, the house will become porous and crumble before its time. Smoking is the act of burning down the house of your own soul while still living inside it. We can be funny sometimes. We are terrified if our phone gets exposed to smoke or water—we panic and rush it to a repair shop. But we let our own lungs become an “exhaust pipe” every day. We say, “Ah, I smoke so inspiration flows!” What inspiration comes from smoke? That’s not inspiration; it’s just an illusion wrapped in pollution. Remember, the Angel of Death doesn’t need inspiration to take the soul of someone busy puffing away. Don’t let it be that when the angel comes, your mouth is so busy exhaling smoke that you forget to utter the words of Tawhid!
4. Conclusion
Dear brothers and sisters, love yourself. Your body has a right to be healthy, your family has a right to have you longer, and Allah has a right to your gratitude through a strong, well-kept body. Stop plunging yourself into ruin. Choose the path of life, not the path of “slow suicide.”
