1. Opening
Friends who are blessed by Allah,
Why is it that in this era many people are academically very smart, yet their actions are often unreasonable? Corruption is committed without hesitation, the rights of others are heartlessly seized, and brotherhood can be severed merely over inheritance or material matters. Why is that? The scholars and Muslims of the past emphasized a great secret: the main gateway to attaining true wisdom is by abandoning what Allah has forbidden and scraping away excessive attachment to the world. When a person allows his heart to be ruled by Ḥubb al-Dunyā [love of the world], spiritual blindness instantly occurs. The world, when chased blindly, acts as a curtain that blinds inner sight and makes the spiritual ear deaf to the voice of truth.Psychologically and mentally, when a person’s main focus is solely on the material, his brain stays in _scarcity mode_—a constant feeling of lack and anxiety about the future. This condition destroys inner peace because happiness is tied to lifeless objects that are inherently fleeting. Religion comes to heal this disease by placing the world in our hands, not in our hearts.
Allah SWT beautifully reminds us of the reality of worldly life in the Qur’an:
وَمَا الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا مَتَاعُ الْغُرُورِ
“And the life of this world is nothing but the enjoyment of delusion.”
[QS. Āli ʿImrān: 185]
Excessive love for the world is the mother of all moral ruin. This was affirmed by Rasulullah ﷺ in a hadith that serves as an alarm for our inner self:
حُبُّ الدُّنْيَا رَأْسُ كُلِّ خَطِيئَةٍ
“Love of the world is the root of all sin.”[HR. Bayhaqī]
2. Lessons and Message
Let us reflect on a true, heart-wrenching story about the impact of worldliness. There was a father who worked day and night, hoarding wealth for prestige and his family’s luxury. He rarely came home, had no time to listen to his children’s stories, and even skipped his prayers to chase project tenders.Until one day, the father fell gravely ill and lay on his deathbed. In his final moments, he saw his children busy in the corner of the room, whispering about how the house, car, and savings would be divided later. Not a single one guided him to recite the shahādah, not one wept sincerely praying for his soul. The father sobbed, staring at the ceiling, realizing that the world he had chased desperately—while sacrificing his Hereafter—had left him in the most tragic loneliness even before he entered the grave.
So that we do not fall into the same spiritual blindness, let us use a simple, thought-provoking analogy.Imagine a monkey that finds a glass jar filled with fragrant roasted peanuts in the middle of the forest. The hungry monkey immediately sticks its hand into the narrow opening of the jar and grabs as many peanuts as it can.But what happens? When it tries to pull its hand out, its fist full of peanuts gets stuck at the neck of the jar. The monkey’s hand is trapped!
The funny thing is, the monkey refuses to let go of that handful of peanuts because it loves the food so much. While holding the heavy jar, it screams in fear, unable to climb a tree, unable to run, until it is easily caught by a hunter.Yet, the way to safety is so simple: just open its hand, release the peanuts, and its hand is free!A person with ḥubb al-dunyā is exactly like that monkey. The jar’s opening is the world, and the peanuts are its adornments. We often become stressed, exhausted, and trapped in a cycle of sin not because the world itself is evil, but because the hand of our heart grips the world too tightly and is too proud to let go!
3. Conclusion & Closing
Friends, the profound moral message from today’s material is an invitation to evaluate the contents of our hearts. This world was created to serve our life’s needs, not to rule over our hearts. Make the world a field where we plant goodness, not an idol we worship day and night. The highest wisdom is when we are able to treat the world like water and a ship. Let the water of the world be beneath and around our ship to deliver us to our destination [the Hereafter]. But never allow that water to leak into the hull of our heart-ship, for it will surely drown us to the depths of ruin. May Allah SWT heal our inner sight from spiritual blindness and cleanse our hearts from the trap of false worldly love
