1. Opening
Friends whose hearts are intelligent,
Have we ever felt besieged by relentless life problems? Piling debts, complicated family matters, plus pressure from all sides. In such critical moments, do we know what we need most? What we need is not strong muscles or noisy panic, but the radiance of wisdom and strategic intelligence born from the clarity of faith. Hikmah in Islam is not merely sitting in silent contemplation, but the ability to think tactically, read situations, and execute the right decision to break through a deadlock. When a problem is faced with a calm soul and an intelligent mind, Allah will open a way out from directions we never imagined
.Let us reflect on how the Qur’an depicts the harrowing atmosphere when the Muslims were besieged by 10,000 allied troops during the Battle of Ahzāb [the Trench], where human morale was tested to its lowest point:
هُنَالِكَ ابْتُلِيَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَزُلْزِلُوا زِلْزَالًا شَدِيدًا
“There the believers were tested and shaken with a severe shaking.”[QS. Al-Aḥzāb: 11]
وَإِذْ يَقُولُ الْمُنَافِقُونَ وَالَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مَرَضٌ مَا وَعَدَنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ إِلَّا غُرُورًا
“And when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is disease said, ‘Allah and His Messenger did not promise us except delusion.’”[QS. Al-Aḥzāb: 12]
It was in the midst of that seemingly hopeless siege that Allah SWT sent help through His servant who used his thinking intelligence. Rasulullah ﷺ taught us an important principle: in facing critical situations, tactics and strategy are vital. He said in a very well-known hadith:
الْحَرْبُ خُدْعَةٌ
“War is strategy.”[HR. Bukhārī and Muslim]
2. Lessons and Message
The highest moral message from this sunnatullah is: One person moving with intelligence and wisdom is far more powerful than ten thousand troops moving without direction. A wise person will not surrender to circumstances that seem impossible. They will self-evaluate, look for openings of goodness, and use their intellect as the best weapon to defend their religion and honor.
Let us picture a cold, tense night outside the trench of Madinah. Inside a grand tent of the allied forces sat a brilliant figure from the Ghatafān tribe named Na‘īm ibn Mas‘ūd. That night, he could not sleep. In the darkness, an extraordinary inner dialogue unfolded within his soul.He reflected and whispered to himself, “Woe to you, O Na‘īm! You are known as a sensible and intelligent man among the Arabs. But why are you here tonight, leading troops to fight a man who has never lied, never wronged anyone, and only calls to goodness? By Allah, what are you fighting for? Nothing but arrogance!”[Muhammad] At that very moment, guidance seized his heart. Slipping through the darkness of night, Na‘īm crossed the trench and met Rasulullah ﷺ in secret. He declared his Islam at the most critical moment. Rasulullah ﷺ smiled, moved, but said softly, “You are but one man among us, so help us as best you can to break up the enemy forces.”Na‘īm did not immediately raise his sword for physical combat. He used his mind. With extraordinary strategic intelligence, he went to the Jewish tribe of Banū Qurayẓah, then to the Quraysh, and executed a very meticulous divide et impera strategy without arousing the slightest suspicion. As a result, the massive alliance that had been solid suddenly turned suspicious of one another and fractured from within. At the peak of the enemy’s confusion, Allah perfected the victory by sending a storm that blew away their tents. One man, with one smart strategy, succeeded in dispersing 10,000 troops without bloodshed.
Imagine you see an enormous, extremely heavy bulldozer. The machine is moving toward your house to demolish it. If you try to hold back that bulldozer with both hands, you will surely be crushed. If you throw rocks at it, its steel body won’t even get scratched. But a smart technician will not fight the machine’s body. He will look for an opening at the back, open the engine hood, and cut one small main cable. Instantly, that terrifying giant machine will shut down completely and lose all power. Such are life’s problems or our enemies. Don’t face their “giant body” with explosive emotion. Draw near to the Creator, use hikmah, and look for the “main cable” of the problem through mature thinking, and any problem—no matter how big—will be paralyzed on its own.
We sometimes misplace our creativity and strategy when problems arise. There are people whose strategic intelligence suddenly jumps to 200% when it comes to finding excuses for being late to the office, or reasons for why the grocery money ran out so fast when talking to their wife! The excuses they make are so neat, logical, and irrefutable that even the greatest detective would believe them.But when faced with real life problems—like how to pay off debt in a halal way, or how to raise children in the digital age so they don’t get addicted to gadgets—their brain suddenly “stalls” and goes on strike. They immediately complain: “Oh Ustadh, I just surrender, this is fate, I have no way out.”This is called “misplaced intelligence.” We use strategy to deceive people, but we’re lazy to use strategy to solve problems on Allah’s path. Emulating Na‘īm ibn Mas‘ūd teaches us that the brain Allah gave us must be used to think tactically in defense of the truth. Besides, what’s the point of having a smartphone with god-tier specs if our thinking capacity still runs on the operating system of “surrender without effort”? When there’s a big problem, don’t just update a gloomy status on social media; sit down, perform wudu, roll out the prayer mat, and rack your brain: “What tactical step should I take today for Allah’s pleasure?”
3. Conclusion and Closing
Friends, the story of Na‘īm ibn Mas‘ūd’s strategic intelligence gives us a grand conclusion: Allah’s help is near, yet often He wants to see how we optimize the potential of intellect and wisdom He has entrusted in our heads. Never feel defeated just because the number of your problems looks like 10,000 Ahzāb troops besieging your soul.Remember, above all human strategies is Allah’s perfect scenario. Our task is to ignite the light of wisdom in our chests, think clearly, take honest strategic steps, then let the “storm” of Allah’s help take care of the rest
