1. Introduction
Friends beloved by Allah,
When geographical distance, damaged infrastructure, or physical limitations become thick walls blocking us from attending centers of knowledge in person, the modern world offers an extraordinary solution. Scientifically, the use of digital technology—through e-learning, instructional videos, and educational apps—can tear down the barriers of space and time. Technology acts as an efficient extension of human hands, instantly distributing knowledge to every corner of the world. In the Islamic view, technology is a wasīlah, a means. When we fill these digital means with beneficial content, online classes, and religious propagation, we are turning devices into highways toward Allah’s pleasure. Distance is no longer a severer of the chain of knowledge; rather, it bears witness to how electromagnetic waves and the internet are used to exalt His name.
Allah Subḥānahu wa Ta‘ālā says about His favor in subjecting various means so humans can traverse distance and space with ease:
وَٱلْخَيْلَ وَٱلْبِغَالَ وَٱلْحَمِيرَ لِتَرْكَبُوهَا وَزِينَةً وَيَخْلُقُ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
“And [He created] horses, mules, and donkeys for you to ride and as adornment. And He creates what you do not know.” (QS. An-Naḥl: 8)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also conveyed that in the end times, knowledge and the messages of Islam will reach every corner of the earth, entering every home, with no place left untouched:
لَيَبْلُغَنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرُ مَا بَلَغَ اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ
“This matter [of religion] will surely reach as far as the night and day reach.” (HR. Ahmad)
2. Lessons and Moral Message
Let us imagine a student in an area recently struck by a severe trial, where schools and roads have collapsed and are no longer passable. The child sits beneath the cracked remains of his house’s porch. In his hand is a borrowed device with a deeply scratched screen. When his meager internet data finally connects, the screen displays the smiling face of his teacher in a recorded lesson or a live online class. The child’s tears fall onto the device’s surface. He weeps not because he mourns his ruined home, but from being moved—because amid physical isolation and rubble, the light of knowledge can still penetrate through a beam of digital signal, giving him new hope to rise again. Technology has saved his soul from despair.
Friends, picture a lush tree bearing delicious fruit atop a steep mountain surrounded by deep ravines. People in the valley could never taste that fruit because the path is too dangerous to climb. But what if the owner of the tree tied those fruits to a flock of swift-flying pigeons, then sent them down to the valley to share with every resident? Surely everyone could enjoy them without risking their lives to scale the ravine. Digital technology, online classes, and video learning materials are our modern “pigeons.” They carry the sweet fruit of knowledge across the ravines of physical limitation and drop it right into the lap of anyone who opens their device with a sincere intention.
There is a story about an elderly man who registered for an online study circle via a video-conferencing app to overcome the difficulty of traveling to the city. Because it was his first time using the technology, he forgot to mute his microphone while the class was in solemn session. Suddenly, the grandfather’s voice rang out loudly toward his kitchen, “Grandma! Where’s the coffee? The ustadz in the phone has been talking for an hour, but the coffee hasn’t jumped out of the screen yet!” The entire online class burst into laughter, including the ustadz. This joke carries deep wisdom: technology indeed cannot deliver a physical cup of coffee, but it has the miracle of bringing the blessings of the classroom and the warmth of fellowship straight into our living rooms—as long as we are willing to learn how to use it properly.
3. Conclusion and Closing
Brothers and sisters, the obstacle of difficult and isolated access has been broken by Allah through the means of Utilizing Technology. Never again let distance be an excuse to stop learning. The solution is now at our fingertips: install beneficial Islamic apps, open high-quality learning videos, and attend online classes that bring goodness. When our bodies are bound to a limited place, let our minds and souls soar far beyond spatial limits through the blessed bridge of digital technology. Let us make the devices in our hands witnesses that will defend us before Allah—that they were used to seek out the light of knowledge.
