1. A Soul-Soothing Scientific Insight
Psychologically, humans have a mechanism of social comparison. When we flaunt worldly luxury, the brains of less fortunate listeners unconsciously trigger cortisol—a stress hormone—and a sense of alienation. But when we speak about spiritual values, the human brain tends to release oxytocin—the hormone of love and connection. Speaking about the Hereafter is a “universal frequency” that can be accessed by both the rich and the poor without anyone feeling belittled.
2. Explanation
Qur’anic and Hadith Evidence
Allah SWT commands us to unite hearts through words filled with goodness:
وَقُلْ لِّعِبَادِيْ يَقُوْلُوا الَّتِيْ هِيَ اَحْسَنُۗ اِنَّ الشَّيْطٰنَ يَنْزَغُ بَيْنَهُمْۗ اِنَّ الشَّيْطٰنَ كَانَ لِلْاِنْسَانِ عَدُوًّا مُّبِيْنًا
“And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces discord among them. Indeed, Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.” (QS. Al-Isra’: 53)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also emphasized the importance of guarding the feelings of our brothers:
مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ فَلْيَقُلْ خَيْرًا أَوْ لِيَصْمُت
“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent.” (HR. Bukhari & Muslim)
3. Lessons and Message
The heroism of a believer does not lie in how high he can flaunt his worldly achievements, but in how low he can humble his ego so others do not feel small before him. Noble character is when you speak about God, Paradise, and righteous deeds—things that can be owned by anyone, regardless of how much is in their bank account. There was a laborer who attended a family reunion. There, his relatives were busy talking about luxurious vacations abroad that cost the equivalent of three years of his salary. He just lowered his head, twisting the frayed hem of his faded shirt, feeling like a “stranger” among his own flesh and blood. But a wise uncle came over, embraced him, and shifted the conversation: “Son, I heard you are very diligent in keeping congregational prayers at the mosque. Teach your uncle how to stay consistent like that.” Instantly, the laborer’s face lit up. He felt valued not for his wealth, but for the noble values he possessed. Speaking about the world is like turning on a blinding spotlight; it highlights one object but blinds everyone else around it. Whereas speaking about the Hereafter is like the morning sunlight; it illuminates everyone without exception, giving the same warmth to both grand palaces and humble shacks. There’s a person who just got back from a pricey vacation, then brags to a friend who’s struggling financially, “Ugh, yesterday we ate there and spent 50 million—it tasted average, just had a nice view!” His friend replies casually, “Wow, that’s amazing. Yesterday I ate a 15-thousand pack of rice, and it tasted extraordinary… because the view was my wife’s smile—her debt was finally paid off in installments.” The rich one falls silent, realizing that “taste” doesn’t always correlate with price.
4. Conclusion
My friends, the world divides because it is limited; if I have much, you may have little. But the Hereafter unites because it is unlimited; Allah’s mercy is enough for all of us. Let us make every gathering a means to unite hearts, not to flaunt social gaps. Speak about repentance, about goodness, and about God’s mercy so that no heart is wounded at our dining table
