1. Opening

Have you ever felt that the small act of goodness you did sincerely in a quiet corner simply vanished without meaning? Or conversely, have you ever felt anxious because of a hidden, minor mistake you once committed that no one in this world knows about? Know that before the court of Allah SWT’s justice, there is no such thing as a “lost case file.” The celestial recording system operates with absolute accuracy, documenting down to the smallest unit that exists in the universe.Scientifically, the modern world knows the term quantum or the smallest atomic structure as the building block of all matter. Long before science discovered the concept of subatomic particles, the Qur’an used the term _“Zarrah”_—a unit so tiny and light it is almost invisible to the naked eye—to illustrate how precise Allah SWT’s system of recompense is.Every vibration of intention, every whispered word, and every movement of the hand—whether it carries pure reward or hidden sin—the legal guarantee is absolute: all of it will be converted into just recompense, without the slightest reduction of right, not even by a thread [lā ẓulma al-yawm].

Let us cool our souls by reflecting on the absolute guarantee from Allah SWT in the Qur’an:

فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَهُۥ. وَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا يَرَهُۥ

“So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.”[QS. Al-Zalzalah: 7-8]

In another verse, Allah SWT also affirms that the Day of Recompense is free from all forms of manipulation and fraud:

ٱلْيَوْمَ تُجْزَىٰ كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ ۚ لَا ظُلْمَ ٱلْيَوْمَ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَرِيعُ ٱلْحِسَابِ

“This Day every soul will be recompensed for what it earned. No injustice today! Indeed, Allah is swift in account.”[QS. Ghāfir: 17]

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also warned us not to belittle small sins that people often consider trivial, through his saying:

إِيَّاكُمْ وَمُحَقَّرَاتِ الذُّنُوبِ فَإِنَّمَا مَثَلُ مُحَقَّرَاتِ الذُّنُوبِ كَقَوْمٍ نَزَلُوا فِي بَطْنِ وَادٍ، فَجَاءَ ذَا بِعُودٍ، وَجَاءَ ذَا بِعُودٍ حَتَّى أَنْضَجُوا خُبْزَهُمْ، وَإِنَّ مُحَقَّرَاتِ الذُّنُوبِ مَتَى يُؤْخَذْ بِصَاحِبِهَا تُهْلِكْهُ

“Beware of belittling sins, for the example of belittled sins is like a group of people who camped in a valley. Then this one brought a small stick, and that one brought a small stick, until they gathered enough twigs to cook their bread. Indeed, the belittled sins, when their doer is held accountable for them, will destroy him.”[HR. Aḥmad]

2. Lessons and Message

The main principle for a believer is to instill the firm conviction that Allah’s justice is absolute. Allah may grant a respite of time [tangguh] for sinners to repent, but remember: Allah delays, but He never forgets.

There once lived an old, thin-bodied rickshaw puller. One day, under the scorching sun, he pedaled his rickshaw with the last of his strength to buy a mouthful of rice for his sick wife at home. At an intersection, a wealthy young man driving a luxury car accidentally clipped the old rickshaw, causing the old man to fall onto the hot asphalt. Instead of getting out to help, the young man cursed the old man, kicked his rickshaw tire until it broke, then sped off, leaving the old man weeping bitterly as he gathered his scattered coins. The old man did not retaliate; he only gazed at the sky while wiping the blood from his knee. The outside world might have thought the young man “got away with it” because he was rich and powerful. Yet not even a month later, at the very same intersection, the young man’s luxury car suffered a fatal single-vehicle accident and was smashed to pieces. The young man survived, but both his legs had to be amputated. In a wheelchair, he wept over his fate. He only then realized that the destruction of his legs and his vehicle was a cash payment for the “single zarrah” of arrogance and injustice he had committed against an old man a month earlier.

Let’s make a simple and somewhat amusing analogy. Imagine you’re on a strict diet to maintain your health. In the middle of the night, while everyone is asleep, you sneak into the kitchen. You take just one—remember, only one—savory atom peanut, eat it quickly while whispering, “Ah, just this one piece, the scale tomorrow morning won’t detect it. Safe!” The next morning, you step onto the world’s most sophisticated digital scale. Unexpectedly, the scale’s needle still shifts precisely to the right! You protest to the scale, “Hey, I only ate one peanut as small as a zarrah!” And the machine seems to reply, “Sir, no matter how small what enters your stomach, my job is to record and weigh it—no discounts!”If a man-made scale can be that accurate, how could we possibly think that “one zarrah” of injustice or “one slanderous sentence” we type in a social media comment section will simply escape Allah SWT’s scale? All of it enters the Divine calculation.

3. Conclusion and Closing

Friends, rather than busying ourselves questioning Allah’s decree over the misfortunes of others, or busy auditing the lives of those around us, Islam demands that we always be critical of ourselves. Apply the principle of _muḥāsabah_—auditing and correcting our own mistakes every day.For every zarrah of goodness we plant, nurture it with sincerity so it grows into a lush tree of reward.

And for every zarrah of sin we have already committed, erase it at once with the tears of repentance before it piles up and destroys us on the Day of Reckoning. Let us better ourselves, for nothing escapes His sight.
