1. Opening
Friends who are blessed by Allah, ….Every day, consciously or not, we are all conducting inner transactions. But what distinguishes the inner transaction of a True Believer from that of the hypocrites or the worldly? Let us reflect on the following table of inner characteristics. A True Believer places the world in his hand, so he is able to reject millions in doubtful wealth to guard his self-purity. In a single day, his inner self undergoes dozens of mental dynamics—he feels fear that his sins will not be forgiven, anxiety over his end of life, yet is filled with hope in Allah’s mercy. For him, success is measured by how much he can GIVE to others.Conversely, the hypocrites or the worldly allow the world to dominate and lock the chambers of their hearts. They know only the outer surface of worldly life, yet are completely heedless of the Hereafter. Their mentality is stagnant, feeling perfectly safe in negligence for decades without ever evaluating their faith. For them, success is purely measured by how much material wealth they manage to ACCUMULATE.
Psychologically and spiritually, the worldly experience what is called spiritual blindness. They are very smart and meticulous in analyzing markets, stocks, or social media trends, but that intelligence suddenly goes completely paralyzed when invited to read the signs of death and the Hereafter. In contrast, a believer has a healthy mental dynamism because his faith continuously beats actively [existing between fear/khawf and hope/rajāʾ]
.Allah SWT describes the characteristics of the worldly with great precision in the Qur’an:
يَعْلَمُونَ ظَاهِرًا مِّنَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَهُمْ عَنِ الْآخِرَةِ هُمْ غَافِلُونَ
“They know what is apparent of the worldly life, but they, of the Hereafter, are unaware.”[QS. Ar-Rūm: 7]
The inner condition of a believer who constantly evaluates himself and never feels safe from hypocrisy is a sign of living faith. Rasulullah ﷺ reminded us through his saying about the dynamics of the heart:
إِنَّ قُلُوبَ بَنِي آدَمَ كُلَّهَا بَيْنَ إِصْبَعَيْنِ مِنْ أَصَابِعِ الرَّحْمَنِ كَقَلْبٍ وَاحِدٍ يُصَرِّفُهُ حَيْثُ يَشَاءُ
“Indeed, the hearts of all the children of Adam are between two fingers of the fingers of the Most Merciful, like one heart; He turns it wherever He wills.”[HR. Muslim]
2. Lessons and Message
Let us recall the story of Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, a great scholar of the Tābiʿīn. One day, he wept bitterly in the corner of his house. When his student asked, “O Imam, what makes you cry so intensely?”He answered with a trembling voice, “I weep out of fear that Allah might look into my heart, then see hypocrisy within it, and turn away from me and say: ‘I will no longer accept your deeds.’ Imagine, a scholar of zuhd so anxious, experiencing extraordinary mental turmoil to guard his faith. How starkly this contrasts with us today: we sin daily, prayers are often late, yet our inner selves feel perfectly calm, stagnant, as if the keys to Paradise were already in our pockets. How saddening our heedlessness is.
So we can understand this striking difference, let us use a simple, thought-provoking analogy.
Imagine two moviegoers, let’s call them The Believer and The Worldly. They are watching a very exciting 3D action movie. The Worldly watches without 3D glasses. He sees the screen as blurry, shadowy, and unclear. But because he sees scenes of piles of money and food in the film, he runs to the front of the screen, hugs it, and tries to stuff that fictional paper money into his shirt. He feels victorious, even though he is just hugging an empty screen! He only knows the “outer surface” of the theater. In contrast, The Believer wears the glasses of faith. He sees clearly that everything on the screen is just light effects, not real, and will end in 2 hours. So, rather than busy hugging the screen, he sits calmly. When he sees a viewer next to him is hungry, he actually gives his popcorn to that person. He knows: success in the theater is preparing to go back to his real home after the movie ends.[3D]
Funny and tragic, isn’t it? Many people in this world are exactly like The Worldly in the theater: hugging tightly to the fleeting “screen of the world,” collecting wealth that cannot be taken home, while ignoring the true reality of the Hereafter outside the theater of life!
3. Conclusion & Closing
Friends, the profound moral message from this comparison of characteristics is a slap to our inner selves: let us recheck our inner transactions today. Has our heart been locked by worldly affairs, or does it still tremble with anxiety and hope in Allah?Do not be proud if we are smart at accumulating wealth, if at the same time we are foolish and heedless in preparing our investment for the Hereafter. The highest wisdom is to be a true believer who measures success by what we can GIVE for the Ummah and the religion, not by what we HOARD for personal ego.
May Allah SWT bring our hearts to life with the dynamism of faith, distance us from the trait of hypocrisy, and save us from prolonged heedlessness
