1. Preface
Neuropsychologically, prayer performed correctly or with khushu‘ activates the part of the brain called the prefrontal cortex. This area is responsible for calmness, wise decision-making, and emotional regulation. Salah is not merely physical movement, but a process of mental “detoxification.” When a person aligns their mind, heart, and movements, the body releases endorphins that create a sense of safety and happiness. This is why high-quality prayer automatically improves a person’s behavior; because a tranquil soul is not driven to cause harm or commit sin.
2. Explanation (Scriptural Foundation & Analogy)
The essence of true prayer is not merely to discharge an obligation, but a reciprocal relationship between servant and Creator, as explained in the following evidences:
A. The Consequence of Neglecting Prayer
فَخَلَفَ مِنْ بَعْدِهِمْ خَلْفٌ أَضَاعُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَاتَّبَعُوا الشَّهَوَاتِ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَلْقَوْنَ غَيًّا
“Then there came after them successors who neglected prayer and followed their desires, so they will meet deviation.
”B. The Criteria of an Accepted Prayer (Hadith Qudsi):
إِنَّمَا أَتَقَبَّلُ الصَّلَاةَ مِمَّنْ تَوَاضَعَ بِهَا لِعَظَمَتِي ، وَلَمْ يَسْتَطِلْ عَلَى خَلْقِي ، وَقَطَعَ نَهَارَهُ فِي ذِكْرِي
“Indeed, I only accept prayer from one who humbles himself in it because of My greatness, does not act arrogantly toward My creation, and spends his day in remembrance of Me.”Prayer without khushu‘ is like a “blank check.” Physically the check exists, but it cannot be cashed because there is no “meaning” in its balance. Conversely, true prayer is a check with an unlimited balance to “pay” for patience when facing the trials of this world.
3. Lessons and Message
Prayer is the “root,” while daily deeds are its “fruit.” It is impossible for the fruit to be sweet if the root is rotten. True prayer requires us to be compassionate individuals within society. There is something both amusing and sad in our behavior: we can stand for hours queuing for food or watching videos, yet when facing Allah, our feet feel like they are stepping on burning coals, so we want to finish quickly.Remember, a person whose prayer is true will radiate extraordinary light. Imagine a devout worshiper who approaches a starving traveler not only with prayer, but with real help because he feels Allah commands him through the depth of his prayer. That is the kind of prayer that makes Allah “smile” and grant every request.
4. Conclusion
My beloved brothers and sisters, let us return substance into the vessel of our prayer. Do not let prayer become an empty shell. If our prayer is true, then all matters of life—provision, family, and peace of heart—will also become true. A person who feels close to Allah in their prayer will never feel lonely or miserable in this world. May Allah make us servants who establish prayer with full love and humility.
