Assalamu’alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim

1. Preface

Epistemologically, human knowledge is usually acquired through observation, literature, or direct experience. Yet in the person of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we witness a beautiful anomaly. He did not pursue a formal academic path, did not read ancient manuscripts, and lived among a largely illiterate society. Logically, it is impossible for someone to recount detailed accounts of past history without references. This is proof that the Qur’an is not a product of human thought, but a radiance of revelation that filled the “sacred vessel” of the Prophet’s ﷺ soul directly from the All-Knowing. This brings tranquility to our hearts: that true truth does not always come from how many books we read, but from the nearness of the heart to the Owner of all knowledge.

2. Explanation

Evidence from the Qur’an and Hadith

“That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you, [O Muhammad]. Neither you nor your people knew it before this…” (QS. Hud: 49)

وَمَا كُنْتَ بِجَانِبِ الْغَرْبِيِّ إِذْ قَضَيْنَا إِلَىٰ مُوسَى الْأَمْرَ وَمَا كُنْتَ مِنَ الشَّاهِدِينَ

“And you, [O Muhammad], were not on the western side [of the valley] when We revealed to Moses the command, nor were you among the witnesses [to that].” (QS. Al-Qasas: 44)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: بُعِثْتُ لِأُتَمِّمَ مَكَارِمَ الْأَخْلَاقِ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I was only sent to perfect noble character.” (HR. Al-Bukhari in Al-Adab al-Mufrad)

3. Lessons and Message

Physical limitations or educational background are not barriers for a person to become a channel of goodness. The Prophet ﷺ, who was _ummi_—neither reading nor writing—became the most knowledgeable human in the universe because he preserved the purity of his heart. The moral message: Focus on purifying the heart as the vessel of knowledge, for beneficial knowledge is that which comes from sincerity, not mere memorization. Imagine the moment when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood before the leaders of his people who took immense pride in their lineage and knowledge. He narrated in detail how Zakariya drew lots concerning Maryam, or the condition of the people of Madyan, without ever holding a single history book. The Companions wept, realizing how close Allah was to the Prophet’s tongue. How moving it is that someone deemed “weak” academically by the world turned out to be the teacher of every intellectual center until the end of time, only because Allah Himself taught him. Imagine an empty, clean glass. If that glass is already filled with thick tea or coffee, it would be difficult to fill it with pure milk without ruining its color. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was that “empty glass”—he was not filled with human writings or worldly ideas—so that when Allah poured the “Pure Milk of Revelation,” its authenticity remained 100 percent unmixed with the stains of created thought. Sometimes we are funny. We study for years at university, carry bags full of books, yet often forget who the Creator of knowledge Himself is. Some people feel smart just because they have many degrees, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had no formal degree from any worldly university, yet he knew the secrets of the creation of mankind and the universe. So do not be too proud of your graduation gown if you rarely lift your hands in prayer. Being smart is good, but being taught directly by God is something truly special!

4. Conclusion

Allah informed the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ of the unseen not merely to tell stories, but as a seal of authenticity that he was an official messenger from the heavens. His inability to read and write is a “Heavenly Diploma” declaring that his teacher was not a human being, but Allah the Almighty. May we always love him and follow the light he brought.
