1. Preface
Psychologically and intellectually, ignorance is not merely an absence of information, but a barrier that causes humans to make wrong decisions. Ignorance is the root of all suffering; because anyone walking in darkness will surely stumble. Eternal suffering in the Hereafter also stems from regret over this ignorance. Knowledge is a soothing light—it gives certainty amid doubt and calm amid the storm of problems. Allah SWT immortalizes the regret of the inhabitants of Hell for refusing to use their hearing and reason to seek knowledge:
وَقَالُوْا لَوْ كُنَّا نَسْمَعُ اَوْ نَعْقِلُ مَا كُنَّا فِيْٓ اَصْحٰبِ السَّعِيْرِ
“And they will say, ‘If only we had listened or reasoned, we would not be among the companions of the Blaze.’” (QS. Al-Mulk: 10) Therefore, the change in a nation’s fate depends greatly on the change in intellectual and inner quality within themselves:
اِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا يُغَيِّرُ مَا بِقَوْمٍ حَتّٰى يُغَيِّرُوْا مَا بِاَنْفُسِهِمْۗ
“Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.” (QS. Ar-Ra'd: 11)
2. Explanation
Imagine someone given a beautiful golden key to open a treasure chest, yet he doesn’t know how to use it. He instead uses the key to dig soil or throw at birds. The key is noble, but due to ignorance, he still lives poor beside his own chest of gold. That’s how we are with the Qur’an and our own potential; we possess the “key” to civilization, yet without knowledge, we suffer amid abundant mercy. We often busy ourselves blaming outsiders—oppressors, traitors, or destroyers—as the cause of our downfall. But in truth, the enemy’s strength is only a shadow of our weakness. We are our own enemy as long as we refuse to learn. We can be funny sometimes; we pray to be victorious over enemies, yet after reading just one page of a book we get sleepier than after taking a sleeping pill. We protest that the economy is controlled by others, but we’ve memorized marketplace discount lists better than the trading strategies of the Messenger ﷺ. It’s like a person afraid of thieves yet leaving his house door wide open while posting a sign: “Thieves not allowed—I'm sleeping soundly.” Of course the thief still enters, smiling! Let’s stop being “victims” who enable the perpetrators through our own ignorance. External forces can only enter through the cracks of ignorance we leave open.
3. Lessons and Message
The fundamental lesson for us is that knowledge is not mere ornamentation of titles, but a shield of defense.
The moral message: stop being a nation of commentators and start being a nation of knowledgeable contributors. Light the lamp of knowledge in every aspect of life—from how we worship to how we trade and engage in politics. For when a people become aware of their rights and duties through knowledge, no force on earth can demean or exploit them
.4. Conclusion
My brothers and sisters, misery is the result of the darkness of ignorance. Let us end this suffering by returning to the tradition of reading, listening, and thinking. Don’t let enemies exploit the gaps of our ignorance any longer. As Allah says in Surah Al-Anfal, resolution and victory will come to those who cease negligence. Let us kindle the light of knowledge, for Allah is always with those who believe and who possess knowledge
