1. Preface

Extraordinary religious friends, in ethical philosophy there is a fundamental difference between Justice and Benevolence. Justice is giving rights to those who deserve them with precision—an eye for an eye, a wound for a wound. Yet psychologically, justice can only restore social order, while Goodness or Forgiveness can restore a broken soul. Scientifically, the act of forgiving has been proven to lower stress-center activity in the brain and increase heart coherence. Justice is the foundation of the earth that keeps it from collapsing, but goodness is the horizon that makes life feel expansive and meaningful. This principle is a direct command from Allah SWT for us to rise to a higher degree of humanity:

اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْاِحْسَانِ

“Indeed, Allah commands justice and excellence.” (QS. An-Nahl: 90)In fact, Allah specifically guarantees reward for those who choose the path of forgiveness over merely demanding their rights:

فَمَنْ عَفَا وَاَصْلَحَ فَاَجْرُهٗ عَلَى اللّٰهِ

“But whoever pardons and makes reconciliation—his reward is from Allah.” (QS. Asy-Syura: 40)

2. Explanation

Justice is an obligation that preserves order, but goodness is voluntary—a nobility born from one’s closeness to his Lord. Taking one’s right is truth, but granting forgiveness is a light that revives hope. Imagine a father whose child is injured in an accident; instead of suing the driver who trembles in fear, he says gently: “I forgive you for the sake of Allah.” In that moment, the father not only frees the driver from legal prison, but he “brings back to life” a human soul nearly dead from guilt. This is the pinnacle of the beauty of faith.Justice is like a building that stands upright and sharp; it protects but is rigid. Whereas goodness is like the flower garden around it; it gives fragrance and coolness. A city without buildings would collapse, yet a city without gardens would feel barren and oppressive. We can be funny sometimes; when we are the ones at fault, we beg others to apply the principle of “Goodness.” We say, “God Himself is the Most Forgiving!” But when others are at fault, we suddenly become the “Most Just Judge in the World” who calculates every inch of loss. Remember, if you want Allah to give you the “Package of Goodness” in the Hereafter, don’t be stingy about giving the “Package of Forgiveness” to others in this world!

3. Lessons and Message

The fundamental lesson for us is that law is the minimum threshold, while ihsan (excellence/goodness) is the maximum threshold of a servant.

The moral message: when you have the power to punish yet choose to relinquish that right for Allah, you are actually becoming the “hand of God” spreading mercy on earth. Do not be satisfied with merely being legally correct, but be spiritually noble by making room in your heart for the faults of others.

4. Conclusion

Beloved brothers and sisters, rise one level higher to become the good-doers (Muhsinin). Justice is sufficient, but goodness is abundant. If you can forgive when you have the right to punish, do so, because there your reward is directly guaranteed by Allah SWT without intermediary. Make forgiveness the identity of your soul, so you may find a peace that no resentment can ever give
