1. Opening

Friends, whom Allah has blessed, we often gaze at the night sky, marveling at scattered stars and sprawling galaxies, and we feel so tiny, lonely, and insignificant. But do you know what Amīrul Mu’minīn ‘Alī bin Abī Ṭālib, may Allah ennoble his face, said? He awakened our awareness with his legendary verse:

“You think you are just a small body, but within you lies a universe far greater.”Modern science today has come to affirm that noble statement. This body of ours, friends, is not merely a lump of flesh and bone, but a walking replica of the earth and the cosmos.Let us reflect on this astonishing resemblance: The Flow of Life: The earth has a network of rivers channeling water to every corner of land to revive dead soil. Inside our bodies, Allah laid out blood vessels spanning tens of thousands of kilometers, flowing blood like a river of life that supplies nutrients to every cell without ever tiring. Dominance of Water: About 70% of the earth’s surface is covered by water. In what is no coincidence, about 60% to 70% of human body weight also consists of water. We are water beings walking upon land. Harmonious Ecosystem: On earth, billions of living creatures form an ecosystem. If one goes extinct, nature’s balance is disrupted. Likewise, in our digestive system and on our skin, trillions of microorganisms [the microbiome] coexist. They safeguard our immunity. If this micro-ecosystem is damaged, our bodies fall ill.

Allah Subḥānahu wa Ta‘ālā has indicated the readability of His signs in the Qur’an:

وَفِي الْأَرْضِ آيَاتٌ لِلْمُوقِنِينَ وَفِي أَنْفُسِكُمْ ۚ أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ

“And on the earth are signs for those of assured faith, and in yourselves. Then will you not see?” (QS. Adh-Dhāriyāt: 20–21)

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also reminded us how micro a part within us can be, yet it determines the harmony of the entire “universe” of the body:

أَلَا وَإِنَّ فِي الْجَسَدِ مُضْغَةً إِذَا صَلَحَتْ صَلَحَ الْجَسَدُ كُلُّهُ وَإِذَا فَسَدَتْ فَسَدَ الْجَسَدُ كُلُّهُ أَلَا وَهِيَ الْقَلْبُ

“Beware! There is a piece of flesh in the body—if it is sound, the whole body is sound; if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Beware! It is the heart.” (HR. Bukhārī & Muslim)

2. Lessons and Message

Imagine a pregnant mother. In her dark womb is a tiny fetus that knows nothing yet. Its intricate network of blood vessels, its heart beginning to beat—all form automatically without the mother’s intervention. The mother can only pray and weep in prostration, hoping the “little universe” in her belly grows perfectly.Yet, deep sorrow often comes as that human grows up. How many people are given a “universe” so magnificent by Allah, yet they destroy it themselves? They pollute their “bloodstream rivers” with illicit substances and toxins. They ruin their “body’s ecosystem” with greedy lifestyles and endless stress, forgetting gratitude, until the body withers sick before its time. How tragic—we often cry seeing forests burn out there, but we never cry when we burn the “forest of health” within ourselves.

Let’s use an analogy. Our body is like a Cosmic Nation or a vast metropolitan city. The heart is its power plant, the brain is its command center and satellite, and white blood cells are its soldiers patrolling 24 hours to guard the borders from enemy attacks [viruses and bacteria]. When you eat a bite of healthy food, you’re sending the best logistical aid to bring prosperity to the city’s residents inside your body. Conversely, when you take in anger, envy, and bad food, you’re sending a “time bomb” ready to collapse that magnificent city’s infrastructure.

It’s funny how we humans are. We’re willing to pay dearly, buy plane tickets, climb high mountains, or dive into deep seas just to find beautiful scenery for “healing” or to calm our minds. We busy ourselves photographing the beauty of nature outside.Yet, if we want free healing that’s closest to us, just look in the mirror! See our eyes that can auto-focus without expensive lenses, see our fingers that can hold a coffee cup with precision without needing complex computer code. If robots out there need batteries plugged into electricity every few hours, this “robot” of our body only needs a plate of coconut rice and a glass of water to run laps around a field! So why search for beauty far away when the greatest miracle is wearing the clothes you have on right now?

3. Conclusion and Closing

My blessed brothers and sisters, the conclusion of our reflection today is: Knowing yourself is the key to knowing the Divine. Our body is a walking replica of the earth, and our soul is a boundless universe. We are not cheap material beings; we are a masterpiece of creation. If even the earth’s balance is maintained by Allah, then maintain the balance of the universe within you. Guard your bloodstream with food that is halal and tayyib. Guard your soul’s ecosystem with dhikr and inner peace. Never again feel tiny and worthless, because within your chest is a glimmer of the Creator’s majesty.Let us close with a prayer, asking Allah to always harmonize our outer and inner selves, and to forgive our negligence in safeguarding this small cosmic trust.

والله أعلم بالصواب
