1. Opening
My friends, whom Allah has blessed. Have you ever reflected on the cosmic principle called the Anthropic Principle in modern physics? This principle states that all the laws of nature, the force of gravity, the Earth’s distance from the sun, even the expansion of the universe, are designed with extraordinary precision solely so that human life could exist on Earth. If it were off by even a fraction, this universe would collapse and we would never have existed.Materially, we are indeed small, yet functionally, we are the center of the universe’s attention. Reinforcing this, Amīrul Mu’minīn ‘Alī bin Abī Ṭālib, may Allah ennoble his face, said:
“You think you are just a small body, but within you lies a universe far greater.”Why is the universe inside us greater? Because humans are the bearers of the Divine Trust that the heavens, the earth, and the mountains could not bear. Because of that magnificent trust, Allah made humans khalīfah and commanded every component of the cosmos to serve our needs. The sun radiates its light to grow our rice, the wind blows to carry rain clouds for our drinking water, and the oceans stretch wide to provide protein for our bodies.
Allah Subḥānahu wa Ta‘ālā affirms this magnificent facility in the Qur’an:
أَلَمْ تَرَوْا أَنَّ اللَّهَ سَخَّرَ لَكُمْ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَأَسْبَغَ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعَمَهُ ظَاهِرَةً وَبَاطِنَةً
“Do you not see that Allah has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and has perfected His favors upon you, both apparent and hidden?” (QS. Luqmān: 20)
Allah also details what He has subjected to humanity in His words:
“It is Allah who created the heavens and the earth, sent down rain from the sky, and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. And He subjected for you the ships to sail through the sea by His command, and He subjected for you the rivers. And He subjected for you the sun and the moon, both constantly orbiting, and He subjected for you the night and the day.” (QS. Ibrāhīm: 32–33)
Even the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reminded us how noble the rank of a God-conscious believer is in Allah’s sight, such that the value of his soul is greater than the destruction of the world:
لَزَوَالُ الدُّنْيَا أَهْوَنُ عَلَى اللَّهِ مِنْ قَتْلِ رَجُلٍ مُسْلِمٍ
“The vanishing of this world is lighter to Allah than the killing of a Muslim man.”
2. Lessons and Message
Friends, the moral lesson from this subjection [taskhīr] is responsibility. The universe obeys Allah completely to serve us, but how do we treat this earth?
Imagine a heartbreaking scene on a shoreline. A giant whale is stranded in a wretched state and eventually dies. When scientists open its stomach, they find dozens of kilograms of plastic waste—bottles, bags, even torn nets. The ocean that Allah subjected to give us tranquility and provision, we repay by sending it poison and waste. The saddest thing is when selfish humans forget this trust. The universe obeys without pause—the sun is never late to rise, the earth never stops spinning—but humans, who are fully serviced by nature, often delay their prostration to Allah, destroy the environment, and wrong one another. We act like spoiled kings, enjoying the palace’s facilities while tearing down its foundation pillars.
Imagine you are the Chief Executive Officer [CEO] of an ultra-luxurious mega corporation. The company provides you: a magnificent skyscraper, the finest company car, a ready team of aides, and the most advanced tech systems. All those facilities are placed under your command. Are all those luxuries given so you can lounge around and play games in your office? Of course not! All those facilities are given so you can lead the company, make major decisions, and bring prosperity to many people. The sky, the earth, day, and night are “company facilities” from Allah. You are the CEO on earth [Khalīfatullāh fil Ardh]. Your job is to bring prosperity to the earth through justice, knowledge, and worship—not to be a greedy destroyer.
It’s funny how we humans, as trustees, behave. We often feel the most powerful and arrogant when we have status or abundant wealth. We act as if we own the world. Yet, if we’re honest, we are the most served and most dependent creatures in the universe. Think about it: honeybees work day and night squeezing flower nectar, then we come with a spoon and eat the honey for free. Cows eat grass, process it in their stomachs, and we just milk them for our latte. Chickens lay eggs while clucking in the heat, and we enjoy our sunny-side-up breakfast. So, every creature on earth is actually your “official servant” paid directly by Allah. If the entire earth has gone out of its way to serve us, how can we still be arrogant and lazy to worship? That’s a boss with no self-awareness!
3. Conclusion and Closing
My blessed brothers and sisters, the conclusion of our grand reflection today is: Our matter is small, but our responsibility is immense.Allah has subjected the grandeur of heaven and earth beneath our feet not to indulge our desires, but so we have the time, energy, and means to fulfill the trust of worship and leadership. The universe out there has done its job obediently. Now the question returns to each of us: Has the little universe in our chest obeyed and prostrated to the One Who Subjects All?Let us ask Allah to make us trustworthy servants—able to care for the earth and maintain harmony in life according to His Sharia.
