1. Opening
Friends, whom Allah has blessed, we often feel small, insignificant, and drowned in the vastness of the world. But let us reflect on these pearls of wisdom from Amīrul Mu’minīn ‘Alī bin Abī Ṭālib, may Allah ennoble his face:
“You think you are just a small body [of matter], but within you lies a universe far greater.”Scientifically, modern science today actually bows in affirmation of his words. Through spectral analysis of stars, astronomers have discovered an astonishing fact: our bodies are composed of the exact same chemical elements as cosmic dust and the stars in space. The carbon in our cells, the iron in our blood, and the calcium in our bones were all forged in the hearts of stars billions of years ago. Physically, we are “fragments of the sky” walking upon the earth!
Allah Subḥānahu wa Ta‘ālā has hinted at the majesty of this creation in the Qur’an:
وَفِي الْأَرْضِ آيَاتٌ لِلْمُوقِنِينَ وَفِي أَنْفُسِكُمْ أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ
“And on the earth are signs for those of assured faith, and in yourselves. Then will you not see?” (QS. Adh-Dhāriyāt: 20–21)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also reminded us how tremendous the potential is that Allah entrusted within a mere piece of human flesh:
أَلَا وَإِنَّ فِي الْجَسَدِ مُضْغَةً إِذَا صَلَحَتْ صَلَحَ الْجَسَدُ كُلُّهُ وَإِذَا فَسَدَتْ فَسَدَ الْجَسَدُ كُلُّهُ أَلَا وَهِيَ الْقَلْبُ
“Beware! There is a piece of flesh in the body—if it is sound, the whole body is sound; if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Beware! It is the heart.” (HR. Bukhārī & Muslim)
2. Lessons and Message
Imagine a luxury watch. On the outside it looks small and simple, just circling the wrist. But once you open the back case, you’ll see hundreds of micro gears, axles, and springs working with relentless, high-level precision. That is you. Your body may only be 160 or 170 centimeters tall, taking up very little space on earth. Yet within you are trillions of cells glorifying Allah as they perform their tasks, there is a mind that can pierce the limits of the heavens, and there is a heart [qalb] that, when it yearns for Allah, makes even His Throne tremble. On the corner of a city, a servant of Allah sat lost in thought on a cold night. He felt his life was ruined, felt worthless, scorned by people, and as if the world had ended just because of one failure. He wept bitterly, staring at his thin, weak body. How sad it is to see a human measure his worth only by the judgment of fleeting worldly matter. If only he knew the secret of his creation—if only he knew that the Creator of the Universe breathed part of His spirit into him—he would never beg for recognition from creatures. He would stand tall, prostrate, and realize that within his fragile soul lies the mighty power of the cosmos, because it is directly connected to Al-Khāliq [The Creator].
Sometimes we are funny. We willingly pay for expensive tickets to see the beauty of a planetarium or go to a star observatory to marvel at the universe. Yet, if we just looked in the mirror and reflected for a moment, we’d be seeing a “cosmic being” far more complex than any galaxy!Sadly, many of us have bodies made of noble stardust, yet our behavior is still often like “street dust” that stings others’ eyes with gossip and prejudice. Astaghfirullah.
3. Conclusion and Closing
My blessed brothers and sisters, the highest moral lesson from this collaboration of science and the wisdom of Sayyidina ‘Alī is to honor your existence as a servant of Allah. Never debase yourself with disobedience, for your body was designed from pure and noble matter. If this vast universe submits and glorifies Allah, how strange it is if the “little universe” inside your chest refuses to prostrate to Him. Know that you are not just a spectator in this universe—you are part of the universe itself, created for a grand mission: to be a khalīfah who spreads mercy.[vicegerent]Let us guard the “universe” within us so it continues to shine brightly with faith, not dim and die in the darkness of sin
