1. Introduction
Scientifically, the universe operates on the principle of Homeostasis—the ability of a system to maintain a stable condition in order to function properly. Our body gets sick if the temperature is too hot, yet freezes if it is too cold; it must remain in the middle (normal). The same applies to the soul. Moderation psychologically protects us from burnout due to excessive ambition, and from apathy that kills our potential. A Wasathiyah life is a life in tune with the rhythm of nature; it is calm, measured, and sustainable
Evidence from the Qur’an and Hadith
Allah SWT has made the Muslim ummah a just nation on the middle path:
وَكَذَٰلِكَ جَعَلْنَاكُمْ أُمَّةً وَسَطًا لِتَكُونَوا شُهَدَاءَ عَلَى النَّاسِ
"And thus We have made you (Muslims) a middle nation so that you may be witnesses over the people." (QS. Al-Baqarah : 143)
خَيْرُ الأُمُورِ أَوْسَطُهَا
"The best of affairs is the most moderate." (HR. Al-Baihaqi)
2. Lessons and Messages
Moderation does not mean compromising on truth; it means having the courage to remain just even amid emotion. Do not let your hatred for a people cause you to act unjustly, and do not let your love for something blind you to its faults. A moderate person has a heart as vast as the ocean—able to contain various differences without losing the purity of its own water.Recall the story of three companions who came to the house of the Prophet’s wife. One resolved to pray all night without sleeping, the second wanted to fast forever without breaking it, and the third wanted to remain celibate without marrying for the sake of total devotion. The Messenger of Allah SAW gently reprimanded them, saying, "I am the most God-fearing among you, yet I pray and I sleep, I fast and I break my fast, and I marry women." He taught that true spirituality does not require destroying our humanity. That is the beauty of moderation.Moderation is like a guitar string. If the string is pulled too tight, it will snap when plucked. But if it is left too loose, it will not produce a beautiful sound. Only when the string is pulled with the “right” tension (moderate) can the guitar produce a melody that captivates the soul. Such is our life; harmony only arises from balance. There was someone who had just learned religion and wanted to be very moderate. At lunch he was asked, "Do you want it spicy or not?" He answered, "I’ll go Wasathiyah—grind half the chili, but it must not enter my mouth; just look at it so my appetite doesn’t get extreme!" As a result, he wasn’t full and his eyes hurt from the chili vapor. The lesson: Moderation uses common sense, not weird rules that end up torturing yourself. Don’t be so rigid that you’re seen as “strange,” and don’t be so loose that you’re seen as “lost.”
3. Conclusion
Dear brothers and sisters, moderation is Islam’s distinction. It is the key to preserving unity amid diversity and maintaining sanity in an increasingly extreme world. With Wasathiyah, we become people who are strong yet gentle, firm yet courteous, and devout yet grounded."O Allah, adorn our lives with the beauty of the middle path, and keep us away from going beyond limits and from taking religious matters lightly. Amin
