1. Introduction
In legal epistemology, Islamic Sharia was revealed with Maqashid (objectives) to safeguard human welfare. The opposite of Wasathiyah in Sharia lies at two extremes. First, Textual Rigidity (Zhahiri), those who worship the text literally without understanding its spirit and context, making religion feel suffocating and puritanical. Second, Liberal License, those who idolize reason to the point of discarding definitive texts (qath’i) in the name of modernity. Wasathiyah is the beautiful meeting point: we submit to the text, yet are wise in understanding its context. Sharia is a mercy, not a burden that kills reason.
Evidence from the Qur’an and Hadith
يُرِيْدُ اللّٰهُ بِكُمُ الْيُسْرَ وَلَا يُرِيْدُ بِكُمُ الْعُسْرَ
"Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship..." (QS. Al-Baqarah : 185)
مَا نَهَيْتُكُمْ عَنْهُ فَاجْتَنِبُوْهُ وَمَا أَمَرْتُكُمْ بِهِ فَأْتُوْا مِنْهُ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ
"What I have forbidden you, avoid it; and what I have commanded you, do it as much as you are able." (HR. Muslim)
2. Lessons and Messages
Sharia was revealed to humanize humans. If the way we practice religion makes us lose empathy or leads us to violate the bounds of humanity, then something needs to be corrected in our understanding. Be a servant who obeys God’s rules without losing common sense and a gentle heart. In the time of Umar bin Khattab ra., there was a severe year of famine (Aamur Ramadah). Textually, the punishment for theft is amputation of the hand. However, Umar looked at the context: many people stole out of necessity to survive. Umar was not textually rigid; he suspended the punishment because he understood the spirit of Sharia is justice and protection of life. He taught us that God’s law is not to oppress the weak, but to guarantee universal welfare.Sharia is like a railway track. Without tracks, the train would run wild and eventually crash (boundless liberalism). But the tracks must also be maintained and adjusted to the terrain so the train can run comfortably and reach its destination. If the tracks are laid rigidly without regard for curves or inclines (textual rigidity), the train will derail. Wasathiyah ensures our train of faith stays on the tracks, yet still moves in tune with the times. There was a man so textually rigid that he read the hadith, "Every innovation is misguidance." One day he refused to take a plane for Hajj. He said, "In the Prophet’s time they went to Makkah by camel; flying by plane is an innovation!" His friend retorted, "True, brother, but then don’t use a microphone for the adhan, don’t wear glasses to read the Qur’an, and one more thing: if you insist on riding a camel to Makkah now, the camel might get stressed seeing the traffic jams!" The lesson: Do not confuse the ways of worship with the tools of life. Sharia makes things easy; it does not send us back to the Stone Age
3. Conclusion
Dear brothers and sisters, practicing religion intelligently means not being extreme. Do not ignore the texts of Sharia to follow liberal whims, but neither freeze in textualism that blinds us to human realities. Take the middle path—firm in principle, yet flexible in application. May Allah guide us upon the shirathal mustaqim.
