1. Introduction
Psychologically, humans are created with two basic needs: the desire for freedom (autonomy) and the need for boundaries (structure). The opposite of Wasathiyah in akhlaq is the loss of this balance. On one side, there is Absolute Freedom (moral liberalism) that sees rules as a prison, even though without rules, humans lose their humanity. On the other side, there is Fatalistic Rigidity (stiffness) that views life through a black-and-white lens with no room for mercy or human condition. Wasathiyah comes as a light that gives space for responsible freedom under the shade of revelation.
Evidence from the Qur’an and Hadith
"And do not let your hand be chained to your neck (stingy), nor extend it fully (extravagant), or you will sit blamed and regretful." (QS. Al-Isra' : 29)
إِنَّمَا بُعِثْتُ لِأُتَمِّمَ صَالِحَ الْأَخْلَاقِ
"I was sent only to perfect noble character." (HR. Ahmad)
2. Lessons and Messages
Righteous character is about sincerity. True freedom is when we are able to free ourselves from the slavery of desire. Meanwhile, true firmness is standing on principle without being harsh and hard-hearted. Be a person who is gentle yet unbreakable, and be strong yet still able to embrace others.Recall the story of a Bedouin who urinated in a corner of the Prophet’s Mosque. The companions who saw him became angry and wanted to rebuke him harshly (a rigid attitude). But the Messenger of Allah SAW restrained them with compassion and said, "Leave him, do not interrupt his urination." After he finished, he ordered it to be washed with a bucket of water and advised the Bedouin very gently. The Bedouin was so moved that he prayed, "O Allah, have mercy on me and Muhammad only, and do not have mercy on anyone else with us." The Messenger smiled upon hearing that "selfish" prayer while explaining that Allah’s mercy is vast. This is wasathiyah character: still upholding the sanctity of the mosque, yet still preserving human dignity.Character is like a river. If the water flows without any embankment at all (absolute freedom), it will overflow into a flood that destroys everything in its path. But if the water is completely dammed with no gap at all (fatalistic rigidity), it will become stagnant, decay, and bring no benefit. Wasathiyah is building a strong embankment so the water flows powerfully, clearly, and with energy to turn the mill of life. There was a man so “rigid” in following the Sunnah of dress that he wore a long robe in the rainy season while walking through a muddy road. Because he felt it was "haram" to lift the hem of his robe even slightly (afraid it would not match the classic style), his robe ended up sweeping the mud and became filthy. His friend asked, "Why not lift it a bit to keep it clean?" He answered seriously, "I’m guarding the principle!" His friend laughed, "Brother, the principle is to maintain cleanliness, not to keep the mud so it comes with you to the mosque!" The lesson: Let us not be so rigid that we forget the very purpose of the religion itself.
3. Conclusion
Dear brothers and sisters, do not let yourselves fall into reckless freedom that only indulges desire, nor get trapped in rigidity that makes the face of Islam look terrifying and inhumane. Take the middle path, for therein lies beauty and safety. May Allah adorn our inner selves with noble and balanced character.
