1. Introduction
Epistemologically, humans often fall into two extreme pits. The first is excessive Cognitive Bias, where a person links every event to unfounded supernatural forces (Superstition), thereby killing cause-and-effect logic. The second is reductionist Materialism, which assumes reality is only what can be seen under a microscope and touched by hand, thereby killing the spiritual dimension. In neuroscience, the human soul needs balance. A moderate creed stimulates the Prefrontal Cortex to think logically (scientifically), while still giving room for the limbic system to feel peace through belief in the All-Unseen Creator. This is true mental harmony.
Evidence from the Qur’an and Hadith
Allah SWT teaches us to acknowledge the unseen without abandoning observation of the tangible world:
الَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْغَيْبِ وَيُقِيمُونَ الصَّلَاةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ يُنْفِقُونَ
"(They are) those who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend from what We have provided for them." (QS. Al-Baqarah : 3)
مَنْ أَتَى كَاهِنًا أَوْ عَرَّافًا فَصَدَّقَهُ بِمَا يَقُولُ فَقَدْ كَفَرَ بِمَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ
"Whoever goes to a soothsayer or fortune-teller and believes what he says has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad." (HR. Ahmad)
2. Lessons and Messages
Creed is the foundation of the soul’s structure. Do not let that foundation be fragile by believing in fate readings or sacred objects that provide no benefit. Yet do not become arrogant by assuming this world runs on its own without God’s intervention. A moderate creed makes us self-reliant: we work hard as if this world is real, yet we prostrate as if this world means nothing before Allah.Recall the event when the Prophet’s son, Ibrahim, passed away. Coincidentally, a solar eclipse occurred that day. The Arabs immediately whispered, "The sun is grieving over the death of the Prophet’s son." This was a doorway to superstition. Yet the Prophet SAW went to the pulpit and extinguished that flame of myth. He said: "Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs of Allah’s greatness. They do not eclipse because of the death or life of anyone." He guarded the intellect of his community so it remained logical amid deep sorrow. This is extraordinary clarity of creed.A moderate creed is like looking through a window. Those trapped in Materialism only busy themselves cleaning the window glass, measuring its thickness, and thinking the glass is everything. Meanwhile, those trapped in Superstition think the glass is a ghost that can talk. A wise traveler knows the glass is real (matter), but its function is so he can see the beauty of the garden out there (spirituality). There was a young man who felt very “logical” and anti-unseen. He said, “I don’t believe in God because I can’t see Him.” His friend replied, “Do you believe you have a brain?” The young man answered, “Of course!” His friend asked again, “Have you ever seen your own brain?” The young man fell silent. Conversely, there was a person so steeped in superstition that before every meal he first checked the wind direction. “If I eat facing north, the jinn will eat my sustenance,” he said. In the end, he didn’t eat because the wind kept shifting, and he fainted from hunger. The lesson: Use reason to eat, use faith to be at peace. Don’t reverse them!
3. Conclusion
Dear brothers and sisters, moderation in creed frees humans from the enslavement of creatures and objects, toward true servitude to the Creator. Do not become a slave to matter, nor a captive of superstition. Stand upright on the middle path with knowledge and faith."O Allah, keep our hearts firm upon Your straight religion. Protect us from the deception of subtle shirk and from the arrogance of a heart that denies Your greatness. Amin.
